RE: INDIANA AND ALABAMA
“Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman, it is an abomination…”
Fundamentalists constantly refer to this passage from Leviticus 18 as biblical evidence against homosexuals. Historically, the word “Abomination” simply means a separation from traditional or ritualistic norms. The word does not pertain to morality nor suggest anything sinister or evil. Christian fundamentalists have tailored the interpretation of the word to feed the fear and justify the exclusion of an entire group of people from the Church. Ironically, many of the excluded are desperate seekers, looking for love and acceptance. Instead, they are met with judgment from the same people who were ordered by their Lord, Jesus Christ, to “Not judge, or you too will be judged… and with the same measure you use, it will be measured to you.” – Matthew 7:1
Another Biblical conundrum comes from the passage regarding submission to all government authorities.
“Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established…” – Romans 13:1
Therefore, I would have to assume that Martin Luther King is in Hell, and so are the founding fathers, and even the revolutionaries that severed ties with the British Empire and founded this free republic that we call America are burning still.
And what about giving all your money to the poor? I believe the Bible is explicit… “If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give all to the poor…” – Matthew 19:21. Of course, this passage has been forgotten by the same hard-nosed evangelicals who have capitalized on “interpreting” biblical passages regarding “homosexual abomination,” like Pat Robertson (459 Million annually), James Dobson (138M Annually), and Jerry Falwell (8.9M Annually).
We were never meant to be literal when interpreting the Bible. If we were, we would not have football, woman’s rights, tattoos, modern clothing, or America.
It wasn’t the Jews or the Romans who killed Jesus, while they might be responsible for his physical death, the real culprits have emerged throughout history like cold-blooded cobras willing to sacrifice the true message of Jesus for the sake of advancing a misguided ideal of hatred and violence.
“You can’t be gay and believe,” they say. Why not? Is that so shocking? Or is it more shocking that a Religion which claims to offer redemption and love can hate so intensely? How can they exclude people when they claim to welcome all?
So, what is the real message? What does Jesus Christ actually stand for?
“Whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.” – Romans 13:8-10
Happy Easter and remember 1 Corinthians 13:13 – “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love…”
